Mabira Forest is a rain forest area covering about 300 square kilometres in Uganda, located in Buikwe District, between Lugazi and Jinja. It has been protected as Mabira Forest Reserve since 1932. On your eco travel in Uganda you can enjoy the eco tour nature walks and spotting the various common and rare species of birds, primates, butterflies, reptiles like snakes.

Mabira Central Forest Reserve is located on the main Kampala - Jinja Highway in Mukono District. It is 54 km from the City Centre of Kampala and 26 km from Jinja Town. The Eco – Tourism Site is about half a kilometer from the road head along a short dirt road off the Najjembe trading center. The Forest is therefore accessible by all vehicles throughout the year.

Area coverage: Mabira Central Forest Reserve is one of Uganda’s largest surviving Natural Forests covering an area of 306 sq. km.

Attractions:Mabira has Natural Habitat of 312 species of trees, home of 315 species of Birds, 218 Butterfly Species, 97 Moth Species, 23 Small Mammal Species,

Activities: they include Forest Walks with over 68 km of well-developed trail length, Mountain Biking, Bird Watching, Environmental Education and Research, Camping and Picnics, Primate Watching, Butterfly Identification and general Forest Exploration.

Accommodation

Mabira boosts of 3 Banda's which can accommodate a maximum of 10 Guests at the Eco – Tourism Site near Najjembe Trading Centre. The Banda's are self – catering although some light meals can be prepared for you by the House keeper.  There is also a Camping Ground near the Site for do-it-yourself caravans at a modest fee.  Mabira Forest Lodge, a modern eco – friendly facility in the forest.

Mabira forest is one of the largest forests in Uganda inhabiting a variety of fauna and flora which attracts the greatest percentage of Uganda’s tourists.  Mabira forest is located in Buikwe District between Lugazi and Jinja just about 54 km (1 hour) from Kampala up to the forest reserve headquarters. It has been protected as a reserve since 1932. It is covering an area of about 306 square kilometers and it’s regarded as one of the last remaining rain forest and biggest in central Uganda.

It is a home to very many primate species like the red tailed monkeys, Vervets, grey-cheeked manageable; it is a home to over 315 bird species including the Cassinis hawk eagle, Grey long bill to mention but a few, 97 species of moths 218 species of butterflies, 312 species of trees among others species. Forest Walk is one of the most interesting activities carried out in the forest reserve, during the forest walk your eyes will be sighting out different species such as butterflies, different tree species, and primate species such as red tailed monkeys, vervets, and grey-cheeked manageable. Mabira forest reserve is also a home to over 315 species of birds which include Nathan’s francolin, paradise fly catcher, purple-throated cuckoo shrike, sooty Boubou to mention but  a few.

Experiencing the Mabira Forest canopy makes you behave like monkeys! The Mabira Forest Canopy Super Sky way is a canopy “zip-line” system that sends you soaring between the tallest trees in the rain forest. Located 44kms East of Kampala City, outside of Lugazi town at the griffin falls camp, the sky way makes for you a great day. You are led to pass through ancient trees by experienced Sky Captains / Sky guides across a network of 5 zip-lines that stretches 250 metres across River Musamya.

Using climbing gears and high ropes, participants are belayed up the first tree, brought through the whole system and repelled on a 78m diagonal zip. High up in the canopy one is able to enjoy a view of the forest layers, mammals like grey cheeked manageable and red tailed monkeys, birds like palm nut vultures, African fish eagles, great blue turacos and the roaring griffin falls, making your zip a memorable day! The hike back from the sky way takes you past the beautiful Griffin Falls taking a maximum of four hours.
