Destinations include

  1. Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti National Park is the best-known wildlife sanctuary in the world, a quintessential ecosystem of endless plains and spectacular rivers with awe-inspiring numbers of African animals. The vast ecosystem features rolling golden plains, intricate river systems, the Big Five, and the annual wildebeest migration is the largest single movement of wildlife on earth.

The name Serengeti is derived from the Maasai word siringet meaning ‘endless plains’; a fitting title for a place that features far-reaching grassy plains tinged with the twisted shadows of acacia trees and dotted with Kopjes of giant granite boulders.

With more than two million wildebeest, half a million Thomson’s gazelle, and a quarter of a million zebra, it supports the greatest concentration of plains game in Africa, and for this it was granted the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978.

This park covers an area of 14,763-sq-km, but it is the center of the much larger Serengeti Ecosystem – a region that encompasses approximately 30,000-sq-km and is a combination of the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Kenya’s Maasai Mara and several smaller game reserves. The system protects the annual wildebeest migration; so, called because the majority of hooved animals on this astonishing journey are wildebeest, but they are joined in equally staggering numbers by zebra and gazelle.

These animals embark on a roughly 1000-km-long circular trek through unfenced Tanzania and Kenya in search of seasonal pasture and water and are hotly pursued by their predators. It is a phenomenal sight, but the Serengeti also offers rewarding year-round, high-density game viewing, which includes significant large predator-prey interactions, especially in the central and eastern areas of the park.

The camps and lodges in Serengeti

Ewanjan Tented Camp

Lemala Ewanjan is a legitimate tented camp set in a secluded part of the game-rich Seronera Valley in Central Serengeti. The Seronera region is an important wildlife transformation zone between the southern grasslands and the northern woodlands and is renowned for its year-round game viewing due to its abundance of water in the many rivers, as well as for its large populations of resident big cats. Additionally, between April and June, and again between November and January, this area is crossed by the annual wildebeest migration, which provides always dramatic wildlife.

Nanyukie Lodge

This lodge was opened in October 2018 in the tremendous Eastern Serengeti, Lemala Nanyukie matches the same outstanding standards of comfort and service as the other properties in Lemala’s luxury collection, which includes the Serengeti’s Lemala Kuria Hills Lodge and Lemala Mpingo Ridge in Tarangire together with Hamerkop House by Lemala in Arusha.

Lemala Nanyukie is located a 60-minute drive east of the Seronera Airstrip in the park’s central region, and is superbly located with outstanding views across these fascinating ‘endless plains. The lodge itself sits on a grassy savanna dotted with rocky Kopjes and shaded by ancient giant acacia trees.

This area of the Serengeti is crossed by the fascinating wildlife spectacle of the annual wildebeest migration, but also has high-density game-viewing at all times and is well-known for its large concentration of cats, so much so that until recently this area was set aside for scientific research into predators, especially cheetah. As such, Lemala Nanyukie is open year-round, and safari activities like game drives and walks will be accompanied by Lemala’s highly-knowledgeable and experienced guides.

Kuria Hills Lodge

Lemala Kuria Hills Lodge is remotely located in the Wogakuria Hills of the Northern Serengeti. It is a scenic region being characterized by grassy rolling hills, open woodland and tree-lined watercourses; it is a habitat that attracts wildlife throughout the year.

Lemala Kuria Hills is in close proximity to the Mara River on the Serengeti’s border with Kenya’s Maasai Mara, so is also within the main corridor of the world-famous wildebeest migration between July and October.

Our lodge offers unrivaled luxury and sophistication, where you can choose to either relax in style or enjoy the Northern Serengeti’s excellent game viewing (without the crowds) with our superb guides in 4x4 vehicles.

There are several dining options at the lodge or out in the bush, and delicious meals include a choice of starters, main courses, desserts and house drinks. Afternoon tea is served before your game drive, and cocktails at sunset are taken on one of the Kopjes with distant views of the Isuria Escarpment in the Maasai Mara. The Melengali Spa is in a separate tent where you can indulge in massages and manicures in a peaceful, natural setting

Mara and Ndutu Tented Camps

This is a one actual tented camp, but in two locations, Lemala Ndutu and Lemala Mara moves north and south with the seasons to ensure guests enjoy ringside seats to the spectacle of the magnificent wildebeest migration year-round. Both are set up in sublime locations offering a high-quality safari experience with excellent guiding.

Lemala Ndutu Tented Camp is in the Ndutu region of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area near the border of the Southern Serengeti. This area is classic savannah, characterized by flat grassy plains, and the camp is in one of the finest locations in Ndutu to see the migration between December and March.

Tens of thousands of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle usually arrive in December to graze on the newly-watered, highly nutritious short grass plains, and then by February, the main calving season takes place. Predators especially the big cats are highly concentrated in the Ndutu area in these months. With 9 tents, Lemala Ndutu is perched on the edge of a permanent marsh and acts as the ultimate amphitheater to capture the boundless drama that accompanies the migration

The 12 tents of Lemala Mara Tented Camp travel north between June and October to set up under large trees in one of the best game viewing areas of the Northern Serengeti. The exact location varies from year to year. Sometimes the camp is set close to the Mara River, but are always far enough away to remain discreet and not interrupt wildlife behavior as the wildebeest mass along the steep banks during their frantic crossing on their way north to the Maasai Mara.

  1. Ngorongoro Conservation Area

The 8292-sq-km Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) is an extensive highland region along the eastern arm of the Rift Valley, with the world-renowned Ngorongoro Crater as its focal point. The Ngorongoro Crater is, alongside the Serengeti, Tanzania’s superstar park, and it’s a well-deserved title. The ‘crater’ (technically a caldera) is breathtaking - a 160-square-kilometre circle of bush and savannah surrounded by a ring of steep hills, giving it a truly otherworldly feel.

Within the ‘crater’ itself, there are grasslands, woods, swamps and small lakes, inhabited by all Big Five species and hundreds more besides. I love the fact that only male elephants live down here, and if you come in spring, you’ll get to see them wading appealingly knee deep in bright yellow beitens flowers.

In 1978 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in recognition of its outstanding natural beauty and its importance for archaeological research. A descent on to the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater, which is in fact a caldera (a collapsed volcanic cone), is the main draw for tourists coming to Tanzania. With steep protective walls, plenty of fresh water and good climate, it contains everything necessary for its abundant wildlife to thrive.

The Ngorongoro Tented Camp

Lemala Ngorongoro is secretly set in a delightful ancient acacia forest close to the rim of the magnificent Ngorongoro Crater. As it is located next to the quiet Lemala crater access road on the eastern side, a key advantage of staying at Lemala Ngorongoro is the quick and easy drive down on to the crater floor in the morning.

So Lemala guests usually have an hour’s head start over others descending via the far busier Seneto crater access road on the western rim. And of course, can stay later in the afternoon before returning to camp. As Africa’s game is most active in the early morning and late afternoon this means better wildlife experiences for Lemala guests.

Game drives from the camp may start as early as 6.15am and guests can be down among Ngorongoro’s abundant wildlife on the floor within 10-15 minutes crucial for photographers who demand the best light conditions. Escorted walks are also available into the forest and along the crater rim with an armed ranger and Maasai guide.

Details and Amenities

Lemala Ngorongoro Tented Camp has 10 spacious tents that are positioned carefully to provide privacy and with minimal impact on the pristine forest environment. They accommodate two queen-size beds, and as it can get cool on the Ngorongoro Crater rim at night, little luxuries like warm winter-weight duvets, hot water bottles and gas heaters ensure a cozy night’s sleep.

The roomy en-suite bathrooms contain a dressing area, flush toilet and a large safari-style shower. The mess tent is beautifully furnished with grand sofas, lamps, bookshelves and corner cabinets in old wood, chests and rugs. In the evening, guests can gather around the campfire to exchange tales of the day’s safari followed by a sumptuous hearty meal.

  1. Tarangire National Park

Tarangire is one of Tanzania’s lesser-known National Parks, but is a particularly scenic wilderness and a little quieter than other parks in the Northern Circuit. Located only about a 100-km easy drive southwest of Arusha and covering 2850-sq-km, the varied landscape includes African savannah grasslands, vast swamps that dry into verdant plains during the dry season, mixed thorny woodlands and some lovely ribbons of riverine forest.

Tarangire National Park should be on any itinerary of northern Tanzania in the Dry season. At this time the Tarangire River, the lifeline of the park, acts as a magnet for big herds of thirsty animals, such as zebra, eland, wildebeest and giraffe. Most notable though are the elephants. Massive herds move around the park, and in the heat of the day, they all descend to the waterways. Predators tend to follow this migration and the park is literally teeming with wildlife from July to October.

With the exception of rhino, Tarangire is home to all of the other Big Five, elephant, lion, leopard and buffaloes and is especially well-known for elephant herds that can be 200-strong. Most of the plains game seen in the other Northern Circuit parks is resident, and uniquely its home to a few specials too like greater kudu, fringe-eared oryx and gerenuk usually only seen in East Africa’s arid northern parks.

Birdwatchers will be in their element as Tarangire has some of the best year-round birding in Tanzania, and an astonishingly long list of 550 species including many raptors and vultures, and numerous waterfowl in the river and swamps.

Tarangire offers visitors the quietest game viewing of all the parks in the region, and the diverse landscape dotted with giant baobabs and sheltered by granite ridges makes a great contrasting addition to a traditional Northern Circuit safari.

Tarangire Mpingo Ridge Lodge

Guests who visit Tarangire National Park can sleep at Lemala Mpingo Ridge. This lodge sits on top of an escarpment with sweeping views across the perennial Tarangire River and valley below and matches the same outstanding standards of comfort and service as the other properties in Lemala’s collection.

But being the sixth largest national park in Tanzania, Tarangire remains slightly off the main safari circuit but is a terrifically scenic park featuring classic African savannah, green hills, woodlands and rivers and is especially famous for its large herds of elephants, superb birdlife and giant baobab trees.

Details and Amenities

Each of the 15 spacious suites have been carefully positioned to maximize not only the sensational views over the Tarangire valley but also to take advantage of cooling breezes during warm weather.

The 15 suites are furnished with twin or super-king size beds (triples available on request). They feature en-suite bathrooms, private decks, sunken outside lounges that convert to afternoon siesta beds.

Sun downers, early morning walks and game drives (and very special night time game drives) in new custom-designed 4×4 vehicles accompanied by Lemala’s highly knowledgeable and experienced guides are some of the activity’s guests can look forward to during their stay
