Maiko is also an important site for the conservation of the African forest elephant, eastern chimpanzee and the endemic aquatic genet.
- Okapi Wildlife Reserve - this is a reserve with core protection and multi-use areas - The reserve is home to about 5,000 okapi, 4,000 elephants, 2,000 leopards, chimpanzees and crocodiles. Other Ituri rain forest animals include forest buffaloes, water chevrotain, and forest elephants. The reserve has over 300 species of bird, and is one of the most important sites for bird conservation in mainland Africa. Nomadic Mbuti pygmies and indigenous Bantu farmers also live within the reserve.
- Salonga National Park - North and South sections - It is Africa's largest tropical rain forest reserve covering about 36,000 km2 or 3,600,000 hectares (8,900,000 acres). It extends into the provinces of Bandundu, Equateur, Kasaï Occidental and Kasaï Oriental. - Animals in the park include bonobos, Dryas monkeys, Thollon's red colobus, Congo peacock, leopards, forest elephants, and African slender-snouted crocodiles
- Upemba National Park - The system of lakes, rivers, swamps and wetlands supports a variety of fish fauna. This includes over 30 species of Cyprinidae, Mormyridae (also known as freshwater elephant fish), Barbus, Alestidae, Mochokidae and Cichlidae. Bird species include several threatened or endangered species, such as the shoe bill, wattled crane and spotted ground-thrush. Schmidt's snouted frog is only known from the park.
