Best Safari Campsites for Self Drive in Uganda
One of the interesting safaris is when it’s done in Uganda, this is because of the various priorities tourists have while organizing for their safaris. One can either choose to do camping or to book the available lodges in the different national parks of Uganda. On this matter we planned and organized a safari with Moses from 4x4 Car Hire Uganda who bought for us all the permits to the different parks we went to including mountain Elgon and Kidepo Valley National Parks.
Moses advised us to pay first for the permits and also hire a car and also to buy our own camping equipments and the option that was available was to hire them if we couldn’t buy our own materials. We saw this as being hectic and it was to disturb us and we decided to hire car from Nature Adventure the best Uganda Car Rental. After making or the payments, we then booked an Aero plane and in three weeks after we traveled to Uganda. As we arrived to Uganda, we were given all the receipts and permits for the activities we had paid for and even the car we had hired plus all the camping equipments
Since we reached in the evening and the terms governing the car we had hired were restricting us from driving at night, we went straight to Hotel Africana where we based to travel to the east the following day. But before traveling, we were urged to buy all the utilities including edibles and drinking water since they appear to be scarce in these semi arid areas and some umbrellas since it’s hotter there.
We had an en-route shopping at Game a super market at Lugogo on Jinja highway and after we traveled to Mbale approximately 224km and a 5hours drive. Since we were to do mountain climbing, the time we reached didn’t allow us to do so. We camped around the park since we had all the equipments as we hired cooks around the park and at night we lit our lights for easy visibility. We had carried a Tent, Sleeping bag, Warm clothes/gloves/hat, Sturdy hiking shoes, Flash light, Water bottle, Rain Gear and First Aid Kit.
Hiking Mount Elgon was one of our best adventures in 2016.we started mountaineering with miss tourism eastern Uganda as she was narrating about the beauty and wonders of this national park. Mount Elgon is gifted with stunning rock formations, Waterfalls, hot springs, Jackson’s pool, caves, over 300 bird species, bamboo forests, flowers, vegetation, monkeys, rare plant and tree species and the World's largest mountain caldera.
Even though we paid for mountaineering, we felt value of our money since we observed very many interesting features as described above. We spent four days ascending the mountain as we camped at the designated points on the slopes. We got porters around who carried our luggage for $27 per day. We reached wagagi peak which gave us an aerial view point to the surrounding areas and the Sipi falls. After having such a nice experience, we folded all our equipments and the porters carried them as we descended through the Rockies and forests.
Since we were too tired, we camped around in the park as we were preparing to drive our vehicle to Kidepo Valley National Park in the north eastern Uganda. The following day we used Soroti road to Kidepo which was approximately 325km and a 6hours drive to the park due to some poor roads towards the park. We arrived at Apoka in the center of the park. After contacting the park management, we were showed where we had to erect our camp tents.
The next day we went for a game drive which enabled us to enjoy the wilderness of the various wild animals we had never seen before including the burchell’s zebras, Jackson’s hartebeests, bush pigs, bohor reed buck, warthogs, rothschild giraffes, defassa water bucks, cape buffaloes, elands, bush duskier, bush bucks, lions, side-striped jackals, leopards, black-backed jackals, various small cats as well as spotted hyenas.
And a chance of watching some undisputable and rarely found birds such as pygmy Falcon, Varreaux’s Eagle plus the Egyptian Vulture on tops of the other species. We went back to our camping ground for lunch and also to entertain the weather conditions of the place and all interacting with the Karamajongs around the park explaining to them the dangers of poaching. Having sensitized them the next day we packed our camping equipments and headed back to Kampala which took us almost a full day on the way. Since our flight was at midnight, we just went straight to the airport as we handed over all the camping equipments and the vehicle to the owners, but it was a superb self drive camping safari for us in Uganda.
