Ultimate Volcanoes Luxury Camps in Uganda
Mount Gahinga Lodge sits in a stunning location in the foothills of the Virunga Volcanoes on the border of Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The lodge is ideally located for tracking golden monkeys and gorillas, if they are resident, in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
Nestling in the foothills of the Virunga Volcanoes the Mount Gahinga Safari Lodge is an eco - lodge which provides the perfect base from which to track the golden monkeys or climb one of the dramatic Virunga peaks. It is also possible to track the gorillas in Mgahinga, Nkuringo (southern Bwindi) and hopefully in the future, Djomba in Democratic Republic of Congo.
However, the family of gorillas used to move over the border into the Democratic Republic of Congo and travelers would miss seeing the gorillas. But, with the effort of the conservation in the Virunga ranges today the gorillas do not cross but live in the area all times and for travelers coming to Uganda and interested to do gorilla tours in this park is it now much easier. Or if one want to do double gorilla safari and looking at staying at Volcanoes Lodges it is possible.
Guests also have the opportunity to visit some of the fascinating local community projects and take the Batwa Trail to discover the ancient traditions of these people.
The 9 stone cottages have en-suite bathrooms with a hot and cold running shower and flush loo, along a short corridor from the bedroom. Each of the Mount Gahinga Lodge cottages has its own verandah which, like the bar and dining room, looks across the valley with Lake Mutanda in the distance. The sun-room facing the volcanoes, terrace and beautiful walled gardens make it the ideal place to relax and absorb the surrounding landscape.
Volcanoes Mount Gahinga Lodge is on the edge of Mgahinga which is Uganda's smallest national park. It was established to protect the mountain gorillas of the Ugandan sector of the Virunga Volcanoes that straddle Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Of the 600 mountain gorillas left in the world, 300 are found in the Virunga Volcanoes, whilst the other 300 are in the nearby Bwindi Forest National Park.
Although it is only 35 sq km, its volcanic landscapes are breathtaking and it harbours a wealth of animals and birds. No mountain gorillas live in Mgahinga permanently, but several troops move freely between the park and those in Rwanda and the Congo.
Mgahinga is a dense tropical rain forest on the lower slopes of the volcanoes where the vegetation includes bamboo and lots of lichens and mosses: delicacies to a mountain gorilla. There is only one group of mountain gorillas in Mgahinga that is habituated to humans. Known as the Nyakagezi group, these gorillas can be visited on a gorilla trek.
Bwindi Lodge
Overlooking the primeval Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Bwindi Lodge is the finest gorilla lodge at Bwindi. With dramatic intense views of the forest canopy across a serene stream, it is one of Africa’s unique lodges.
The property has dramatic views of the impenetrable forest and is a great place to spot the monkeys and birds hidden in the foliage. It is being transformed and will be completed in 2021 to feature 2 deluxe Banda's, upgraded standard Banda's, a new dining room, and sauna added to the Humula Forest Spa.
The award-winning Bwindi Bar, in the high street of the village nearby is the most stylish and colorful bar in the area! Guests also enjoy informal tapas style meals inspired by Ugandan dishes. It’s the Harry’s Bar of Bwindi! Guests can make their ‘rolex’ wrap and the delicious Gorillini Cocktail, a must-have after a gorilla tracking in Bwindi! The bar was set up by Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust to train disadvantaged local young people in hospitality.
Kyambura Gorge Lodge
The lodge is located on the edge of Queen Elizabeth National Park with sweeping views of the rolling savanna, the distant mountains of the moon, and the sunken Kyambura Gorge.
The stylish Banda's also have a contemporary theme with the accent on local artifacts re-imagined in a new context. Each Banda offers a unique view either across the savanna or the gorge. 4 Deluxe Banda's were launched in June 2019. The swimming pool has been redesigned and upgraded. A new spa was launched in July 2019.
The lodge is the ideal location for tracking the lost chimps in the sunken forest of Kyambura Gorge nearby and seeing the amazing game in one of Africa’s most beautiful and varied parks, centered around the waterway of the Kazinga Channel where animals come to bathe. The park has six hundred amazing bird species, the highest in an African park.
The Kyambura Gorge Eco-tourism project in February 2019 was launched, a series of community and conservation activities developed since 2009 to safeguard the Kyambura Gorge ecosystem.
New walking safaris have been created around the lodge to experience the dramatic landscapes of Kyambura gorge and the Queen Elizabeth Savannah, and visit a reclaimed wetland. Guests can walk along the Kyambura gorge buffer zone we have created to protect the fragile ecosystem from encroachment and contribute to its long-term conservation project by planting a seedling.
