What to Do and See in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is found in the southwestern parts of Uganda and it borders Rwanda and DR. Congo, this is a historical park since it has got the three extinct volcanoes associated with other three swamps. The park has got around 12 endemic bird species along with some animals which are rare including the forest elephants, leopards, golden monkeys and forest hogs. The park has got an altitude of between 2227m and 4127m, the volcanic slopes form a nice stunning ecosystem and biologically diverse peaks hence forming gorgeous scenery.
Mgahinga national park can be accessed by both road and air transport and different air crafts operators are available in Uganda and these are operated from Entebbe to Kisoro on a daily basis. By air this can take you around 1hour from Entebbe to Kisoro. By road, trips are organized by tours of Uganda a local tour operating company based in Uganda. From Kampala to Kisoro it’s around 8-9hourss drive on a well tarmac road, visitors to the park enjoy a variety of fascinating features including wildlife which is only unique to the place. These include,
Mountain gorillas, the main reason for the preservation of this park was to protect the endangered mountain gorillas that were constantly poached by the local people around the forest, this aimed at rejuvenating the gorilla glory in terms of multiplicity. Though the park is the smallest, it has got the best attractive wildlife and gorilla trekking is the main activity within this park, due to the fact that these are known as mountain gorillas, they are found at a higher altitude hence calling for physical ability by the trekkers.
The only gorilla group found within this park is the Nyakagezi gorilla group and this has been tracked for a couple of years, gorillas have got nearly the same genes with those of a human being and therefore behave in accordance with human characters. Visitors who come for trekking are given strictly one experiential hour and seeing them depends on where they spent the previous night.
Visitors can also indulge in gorilla habituation experience and this is the most interesting activity since visitors spend much time with the gorillas compared to those who are on a mere trekking, gorilla trekking permits costs $600 and habituation permits costs $1500.
Golden monkeys, Mgahinga gorilla national park is one of the unique parks in Uganda since it’s the only national park in Uganda where gold meets silver, golden monkeys are only found in this park and this sets the park far apart from the rest. These are also endangered since their species was soon extinction though they have multiplied in numbers after a nice conservation policy. Golden monkey sightseeing primates and golden monkey tracking is the activity done by the majority tourists and tracking them goes for $80 per person per day. These give a nice impression to the visitors since their voices makes you feel home away in another environment as you climb high above the ground.
The three volcanic cones of Gahinga, Muhavura and Sabyinyo gives you a nice back drop of the park due to their former activities around the park, though these are extinct volcanoes, they give a nice scenery to the park. These are part of the eight Virunga ranges volcanoes with the rest being found in Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda and this is the reason as to why the place is a nice one to visit. Once you visit Uganda it’s a memorable experience and therefore you cannot fail to come back again.
